HRI Success Story: Haynes and Boone Team Achieves Victory in Asylum Case

On Jan. 24, Haynes and Boone lawyers Thomas J. Williams and Ian Peck obtained asylum for a foreign citizen who fled her own country after extensive persecution in retaliation for her assistance to an indigenous group.

In December 2010, the client escaped on a visitor’s visa to the United States and subsequently sought asylum. The case was referred to Haynes and Boone by the Human Rights Initiative of North Texas, Inc. and handled pro bono. As an asylee, the client is now entitled to work, seek benefits and, most importantly, live in freedom.

Williams is a partner in the firm’s Business Litigation Practice Group in Fort Worth. Peck is partner in the firm’s Bankruptcy and Business Restructuring Practice Group in theDallas andFort Worth offices.

They were assisted by Paralegal Kim Morzak and associates Erik Martin and Stephen Manz, as well as Gregg Formella and R. Bruce Wark of American Airlines.
